  • Four UCVTS schools recognized in
    Newsweek's Top High Schools in America

    Newsweek has compiled and released the 2013 list of the top high schools in America. Over 2,500 high schools across the country were assessed to produce the final list of the top 2,000 high schools.  Respondents were ranked from statistics from the 2011-2012 school year.  The final reviews included the following criteria: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent).
     
    Forty-one of the top 500 U.S. high schools recognized are from New Jersey with three of the Union County Vocational-Technical School District high schools being recognized in that grouping.  The Union County Magnet High School was ranked #65 nationally, #15 in the Northeast and #5 in New Jersey.  The Academy for Allied Health Sciences was ranked #202 nationally and #14 in New Jersey and the Academy for Information Technology was ranked #468 nationally and #39 in New Jersey.  The Academy for Performing Arts made the list for the first time ranked at #962 nationally.

  • Union County FFA Chapter Awarded Silver Emblem
     
    Members of the Union County FFA Chapter in New Jersey were one of 39 teams participating in the National FFA Agricultural Sales Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held in conjunction with the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The team, led by advisor Bonnie Baldasare, was awarded a Silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 150 other participants. Hashem Selim received a Gold emblem, Sean Pruszkowski received a Silver emblem, Edgar Sanchez received a Silver emblem, and Matthew Hirsch received a Bronze emblem.

  • Congressman Leonard Lance Recognizes UCTECH High School For Blue Ribbon Achievement
     
    Congressman Leonard Lance visited Union County Vocational-Technical Schools UC Tech High School on October 12 to recognize its recently awarded designation as a national blue ribbon school.  The Congressman presented high school principal Jeffrey Lerner with an American flag that was flown over the Capital as well as a copy of a resolution read on the floor of the House and into the Congressional Record.
     
    While on campus, Congressman Lance participated in a presentation on recalcitrant cancers with students from the District's Academy for Allied Health Sciences (the Congressman recently sponsored a bill that was unanimously supported by Congress on funding for research in this area), viewed several dance pieces by students from the Academy for Performing Arts and answered questions in a spirited exchange with AP Government and AP U.S. History students from two other district schools--the Magnet High School and the Academy for Information Technology.
     
    He concluded his visit by having lunch with student representatives from each of the District's five high schools--lunch was prepared by the Culinary Arts class at UC Tech High School.
